小川洋子の作品は「博士の愛した数式」しか読んだことがありませんが、これが初の「本格的な書下ろし長編小説」だというのだから、すごいと思います。
いろんな捉え方があると思います。まず初めに、「華氏451」と同様な捉え方、日本人のなにかがあってもすぐに忘れてしまうという現代のあり方に対する批判、等々。
私は、それらの問題を通して著者の小説に対する無力感と希望がこの作品を作り上げているような気がします。それは冷徹な目で自分自身と社会を見つめ続けた結果としての「無力感」であり「希望」です。この作品自体はとても綺麗で悲しいものですが、それだけでは著者が小説を書き続けることはできなかったでしょう。そこにあるのは「読者」です。読者の存在が希望なのです。
多分、この頃はすでに日本人の「本離れ」が顕在化していたと思います。もちろん、様々な社会問題もありました。その中で小説を書き続けることの意味を著者は見つけたかったのだろうと思います。著者の結論は、良い小説を書き続けることでしかなかったのではないか、そう思います。

I think there are various ways of thinking. First of all, the same way of thinking as "Fahrenheit 451", criticism of the modern way of forgetting something Japanese, etc.
Through those issues, I feel that the author's helplessness and hope for the novel make up this work. It is "a feeling of helplessness" and "hope" as a result of continuing to look at oneself and society with a cold eye. The work itself is very beautiful and sad, but that alone would not have allowed the author to continue writing the novel. There are "readers". I hope the existence of readers.
Perhaps, by this time, the Japanese "book separation" had already become apparent. Of course, there were various social problems. I think the author wanted to find the meaning of continuing to write novels. I think the author's conclusion was only to keep writing good novels.
