Christopher Lasch, The New York Review of Books (November 24, 1977):15-18を参照。
Will somebody please tell my why
Women look so easy telling lies(坂本龍一『バレエメカニック』)
About this book
Translated by Ivan Illich, Gender (1983, Marion Boyars). At the author's request, differences with the German version (Genus, 1983, Rowwohlt) are also shown. Exactly 40 years ago.
The book is about 400 pages (the original was 192 pages), but there are over 110,000 characters. Posting excerpts is likely to be a copyright violation (Iwanami-san, please forgive me. It's personal, and no one is looking at this page). I felt that it was such an important work.
It seems to be based on a lecture manuscript, and more than half of it is made up of "comments." There was a huge amount of references listed there, and I felt like I couldn't read it in my lifetime.

The word "gender" is all the rage these days. The word in this translated book was popular at the time, but I didn't know what it meant and thought it would never become popular in Japan.
"Gender" is not a word Ilyich coined. Experts probably used it as a word to distinguish between genders in Indo-European grammar. These are masculine nouns and feminine nouns. It's not so clear in English, but when I learned English in junior high school, I remember thinking there was something strange about it. "Dog means he, cat means she," and although it may have become more common these days, in French and German, there are clearly masculine, feminine, and neuter parts of speech. The ``biological sex'' of the dog or cat is irrelevant here. Ilyich clearly separates "biological sex" from gender by calling it "sex." Japanese doesn't have gender as part of speech, so it's difficult to distinguish between the two, so I think it can't be helped to confuse gender with biological sex. In general, it seems that ``sex'' refers to biological sex, and gender refers to ``socially created sex differences.''
Gender
① Gender distinction in grammar. ② Socially and culturally created gender differences such as masculinity and femininity. It is distinguished from sex, which refers to biological sex. (Selected Japanese Dictionary)
"genus" in German and Latin. It entered English as the French word gendre, genre. It's a "genre". The Indo-European root is "genə-".
Indo-European root meaning to give life or produce offspring. It also represents things related to reproduction, family, and tribe. Important derivatives include engine, general, gentle, king, nature, and the suffix -gen (representing product). (Hyper English Dictionary)

This year, we are currently accepting entries for the event to be held on Sunday, October 22nd.
There will be changes to the entry slot this year. We have created a new "non-binary slot" for half marathon entries. We want to spread a virtuous cycle that will lead to the future through a marathon held in one town, Tobetsu Town. With this in mind, we aim to create a "sustainable tournament." We will continue to work towards the future, hoping that this competition will be a place where everyone can shine in a gender-free manner.
Establishment of first non-binary slot in domestic competition
So that all runners can enjoy the marathon equally. Starting this year, we will have a non-binary slot for the first time in a domestic competition.
Non-binary refers to a sexuality in which one does not try to apply one's gender identity or expression to male or female, regardless of physical sex. The establishment of a non-binary slot allows entries regardless of gender, male or female. ("Tobetsu Sweden Marathon 2023" Official website)
“Non-binary”. You use a lot of new words ("What is non-binary? [What is the difference between X-gender and queer?]" Job Rainbow Magazine). The power of ``katakana'' in Japanese is that it can be used even if you don't understand the meaning. This is a tradition that dates back to when kanji and kanji entered the Japanese language. There are two readings for ``sex'': ``sei'' (ontomi) and ``saga'' (kun), but to avoid misunderstandings, let's say ``sei'' is ``sex'' and ``saga'' is ``gender.'' Do you understand the difference between "humanity" and "humanity"?
It is only recently that "gender equality" has been replaced with "gender equality (although gender free is fine as well)". Why. I do not know why. I don't think the word "gender" had penetrated the Japanese mind until then. I can only think that the "high-collared" style that has existed since the Meiji Restoration and the inferiority complex towards the West has made the word gender seem "cool".
Vernacular Gender
I use the term gender to specify certain behavioral characteristics, characteristics that are universal in vernacular cultures. did. Gender differentiates the place, time, tools, tasks, forms of speech, movement, and perception that concern men from those that concern women. It is this relationship, unique to time and place, that forms social gender. I call this vernacular gender. For this relationship between men and women, like vernacular speech, is peculiar to the archaic peoples (gens in Latin) of the land. (P.2)
The Latin word vernaculum refers to things that are born at home, things that are spun at home, things that are bred, cultivated, or made at home. and are placed in opposition to those that can only be obtained through purchase. (P.145)
For Ilyich, "vernacular" and "gender" are inseparable. Both words are difficult to translate into Japanese. ``Vernacular'' can also mean ``spoken language, everyday colloquialism,'' but it probably also means ``specific to the area.'' I would like to guess the Japanese word ``indigenous'', but what do you think? It is connected not only to a ``specific space'' called land, but also to a ``specific time.'' Ilyich distinguishes between "vernacular spoken language" and "taught mother tongue."
Vernacular speech is something we develop through daily contact with people who speak our own minds; It is something we learn through the experts we hire for the spoken language. Keywords indicate characteristics of the mother tongue being taught. (P.7)
The former is a "dialect" and the latter is a "standard language (common language)" or "official language, legal language, written language, translated language, scientific terminology" Is it something like this? The former is closely connected to life itself, so there is no need to say much about it. This is because the land (place) and time will tell you a lot. On the contrary, it only works in that place. The mother tongue that is taught can be transcribed into written form. Therefore, it is valid across time and space. Instead, they tend to be long. I have to write a lot because I don't have the time or space to make those words (letters) come true. Ilyich co-authored a book with Barry Sanders called ``ABC--Alphabetization of popular intelligence. A translation has also been published, so I'll leave the details to that, but it deals with the relationship between the mother tongue taught and ``literacy.''
Sex (sexism, sexist)
In order for industrial society to exist, the assumption of a single gender (unisex) must be imposed. The premise is that both men and women are created to perform the same labor (work), have the same perception of reality, and have the same needs despite minor physical differences. And the premise of scarcity = lack, which is fundamental to economics, is itself logically based on this postulate of a single sex. (P.9)
I call the first type of sexism moral sexism, and attribute it to the personality of habitual perpetrators, both individually and collectively. . The second type of sexism is more fundamental. I call this cognitive sexism. This exudes the genders of male and female outside of orthodox scientific concepts and methods (see notes 46, 52). (P.152)
Simply speaking, this means that money has no gender distinction (money for men and money for women). It might be interesting to create coins). It is necessary in an industrial society (commodity society) to reduce everything to a single gender, "human beings in general." The gender of both the person who made it and the person who buys it doesn't matter. ``It's good if it's possible'' and ``it's good if it sells.'' It would be fine if it became a single numerical value called money (there is still a distinction between ``things made by men (women)'' and ``things used by men (women)''. (This does not mean that things used by women (men) are prohibited.) Ilyich calls this "a neutrum oeconomicum."
Equality
From the above theoretical structure, I conclude that
vernacular gender dominationand < em>I would like to contrast two ways of existence that I call the system of sex mediated by economy. As can be seen from the terms themselves, both of these ways of existence are dualistic, andfurthermore, that duality is essentiallyVerydifferent. By social gender, I want to think of a duality that is highly regional and temporally limited. This duality separates men and women into situations and conditions in which they cannot say, do, desire, or perceive the same things. In contrast, by economic or social sex, I mean a duality that advances in pursuit of the illusory goal of economic, political, legal, and social equality between women and men. I want to think about it. When we construct reality (rarity) in this way, equality is generally unfounded, as will become clear. (P.15)Modern
, which has acquired this new, gender-absent meaning, has become >It is clearly expressed in words such as. When it comes to function as a keyword in this way, sex paradoxically becomes a word without gender. When genderlessness is thus completed, it becomes a necessary precondition for the emergence of homoandeconomics. come. It is precisely for this reason that I distinguish betweenvernacular genderandeconomically mediated sex. It is a contrast. In contrast, I refer to the former as mutually complementary duality, and refer to the latter as polarization of certain common characteristics. (P.29-31)Science is sexist in a double sense. That is, science is both a male-dominated enterprise and a construction of genderless (objective) categories and procedures (see note 52). (P.152)
Although men and women are "biologically different," they are part of "human beings (human beings in general)" and are equal as human beings. He is Homo oeconomicus. I don't really understand the idea of ``different but equal.'' If you generalize (conceptualize) it, you can understand in your head that they are the same. But I can't feel it. Are adults and children equal? It's the same thing if you generalize it to "human beings." Are humans and cows equal? If you generalize it to "animal," it's the same thing. Are humans, edamame, and E. coli equal? If you generalize it to "living things", it's the same thing. However, I don't think they are equal (in fact, I feel that there is a stronger sense of equality between humans and stuffed animals).
Feminists dream of a genderless economy and freedom from forced gender roles. On the left, there is a dream of a political economy whose theme is that everyone is equally human. Futurists also have a dream that in modern society humans are plastic, and that dentists, men, Protestants, and genetic experts all deserve the same respect. There is. (P.9)
If I'm a business owner, gender doesn't matter. Hire people who bring more money to the company. It doesn't matter whether you earn that money through "sex appeal," "physical strength," or "perseverance." Biological sex (sex) has only a secondary meaning. Educational background and family status have only secondary meanings. As long as it benefits the company, they are equal.
Shadow Work
Another major (famous) work by Ilyichi is ``Shadow Work" (will be moved to Iwanami Bunko in November). I haven't read it, but I may have misunderstood that as well.
What I call shadow work is the
laborwhich consumers convert purchased goods into usable goods.. Shadow work refers to the time, trouble, and effort that must be expended to add value to purchased goods in order to make them suitable for use. Therefore, shadow work can be defined as the activities that people must engage in in order to meet their needs through products. (P.94)Shadow work became possible when households were transformed into apartments that had the economic function of upgrading products that lacked useful value. This is what happened after I started doing it. It was only after men's work moved from the home to factories and offices that shadow work became clearly established as women's work. From then on, families had to survive on what their salaries could cover. (P.96)
Shadow work is not just a job for women. If a man does it (house husband), it doesn't stop being shadow work. And,
Today, while the time invested in production is rapidly decreasing, the time required for consumption is increasing due to the increasing concentration of goods in society. At the same time, increasingly diverse forms of consumption have become a necessity. This consumption has become instrumental rather than a question of satisfaction with the use of time. For example, Joan drives not because he likes driving or because he wants to drive like his friends, but because driving is something he cannot avoid. (P.102)
For an industrial society (commodity society), the supremacy of production cannot be denied (“services” are also produced). This is because both goods and services must be sold as ``commodities'' and must take the form of ``money.'' We do not know whether capital accumulation is really occurring (productivity is increasing) or not. It doesn't matter whether the profit rate is rising or falling. The problem is that everything has become a ``commodity'', everything has become ``scarcity'', and we should aim for ``possessing a commodity'' rather than ``subsistence''. The birth of humans is the problem. The more we become dependent on products, the more we engage in "shadow work."
PossessiveThe individual is genderless , and anthropologically it is simply interpreted as sex-neutral. Only possessive and genderless individuals, I argue, can fit the scarcity assumption on which any political economy must rest. The institutional identity of homo economicus excludes gender. He is an economic neutral. The loss of social gender is therefore an integral part of the history of scarcity, and of the institutions that shape this history. (P.25)In today's era, economic subjects, genderless, possessive individuals, live by making decisions based on considerations of marginal utility. All economic decisions are embedded in a sense of scarcity and lack, and thus point toward a kind of envy that was unknown in the past. At the same time, modern
productiveinstitutions foster and mask an envious individualism. It is nothing but something created to diminish thesubsistence-orientedsystems of all past eras. ” (P.25-26)
Modern Western society is a culture in which both men and women seek money. And today, consumption is not done for the sake of subsistence. Consumption itself is consumption as an end.
Scarcity = scarcity
Today, the government is considering subsidizing exam fees and cram school fees. I have never been to a cram school where you study for the sake of studying, and I don't want to go to one. Up until high school, I hated school (though college was fun because I was able to study what I wanted). Regarding the scarcity of school (study), I think Ilyichi wrote about it in ``The Society of Deschooling'' (I haven't read it yet). Why do I have to go to a school where bullying is rampant, along a school route full of perverts, to study that I don't like (and which is of no use to me), and why do my parents force me to do so? I'm not convinced that they want us to live up to it, but it exists in our society as an ``inevitable'' necessity (as a product). Parents (and perhaps children) have no choice but to ask. The same goes for drives, trendy sweets, convenience stores, and hospitals.
We all know that it is possible to live without such things. We are here because our parents and grandparents lived and did things like that. My parents told me many times about the food shortages after the war. I heard it many times on TV. I don't think that's a "lie". But except for a period after the war, was life really difficult in Japan? Was it difficult to live in the days when there was no running water, electricity, convenience stores, hospitals, or schools? On the other hand, are we now "rich"?
Today, the word "poor" is contrasted with the word "rich." This was clearly not the case in the Middle Ages. The poor were contrasted with the powerful. (P.132)
Compared to these changes in meaning, the modernization of poverty occurs in the development process of what is called a fundamental rupture. Poverty today means living at the bottom of the consumption pyramid. Modern poverty presupposes scarcity. (P.133)
At least, the current poverty is not a poverty caused by "lack of things." There are things, and new things are promoted on TV every day, but this is poverty due to the ``desire'' of scarcity. And that lack (deficiency) is not something that you decide.
In nation-state frameworks, which tend to monopolize the production of services even where the production and trade of goods is left in private hands, Professional experts "exploited popular fears of disorder and pestilence, deliberately used mystical terminology, ridiculed popular traditions of self-help as backward and unscientific, and thus It created or strengthened demand for the service.'' See Christopher Lasch, The New York Review of Books (November 24, 1977): 15-18. In this context, the professional establishment defines deficiencies by means of scientific opinion, carries out research that confirms this scientific opinion, attributes these deficiencies to concrete individuals by means of diagnosis, We will have the ability to subject entire populations to compulsory testing and provide treatment to those identified as in need of correction, treatment, and improvement. (P.167-168)
If something is unique to a certain place at a certain time, it is "single".
If we refer to individuals or individuals, we would call them "particulars."
Gender and gender roles
Belonging, whatourto our fellow women, and whatourto our fellow women. This means that you can know whether a man is suitable for you or not. If someone does whatweconsider to be the province of the opposite sex, he must be an outsider. Otherwise he must be a slave, deprived of all human prestige. Gender is expressed in every step and gesture, not just in his crotch. (P.141)Gender is not only different from sex, but much more. Gender refers to a fundamental social polarity in which no two places (earlier drafts called it "place and time") can be the same. What people cannot do and what they must do differs from region to region. (P.142)
What is "in the crotch" is sex, not gender.
As vernacular people, people are born, grow up, and become men and women. Gender roles, on the other hand, are acquired. One can blame one's parents or society for one's assigned gender roles or the mother tongue one was taught, but there is nothing to complain about vernacular speech or gender.
The difference between vernacular gender and gender roles can be compared to the difference between vernacular spoken language and the mother tongue that was taught, and the difference between independence and self-sufficiency in life and economic-oriented life. (P.171-172)
In this way, Ilyichi clearly separates gender and "assigned" sex roles. The current media terminology of gender confuses the two.
By contrasting the concept of gender with
culture, “we are making nature itself an accomplice in the crime of political inequality. ``I made him a slave'' (Condorcet). (P.294)
Gender recovery
In Ilyich's terminology, there is no such thing as "gender equality." Gender has already been replaced by sex.
However, I would like to reiterate the point that in the world of gender, gender exists not only in the material elements of a culture, but also in the cognition and symbolic reasoning of that culture. I have to. The extent, perspective, color, and objects observed and apprehended by women are different from those observed and apprehended by men. (P.292)
I wasn't popular, so I couldn't understand women. She thought she was trying to understand, but there was a big wall standing in her way.
Will somebody please tell my why
Women look so easy telling lies (Ryuichi Sakamoto "Ballet Mechanic")
Why can't we understand even though we are "the same (equal) human beings"? This was a more pressing question than why I hated humans or why I couldn't get along with "others." I was thinking of women (others) as ``sex.'' It was the separation of the mind (spirit) and the body (body).
Recently, I've come to understand a little more. I have come to understand that ``I don't know.'' To put it more simply, "different things are not the same." In order to be popular (want to understand others), I was trying to force myself to think that they were ``the same'' as me. Solipsism (“What I call solipsism is not the idea that I am the only one.The idea that what can be said for me can be said for everyone is what is called solipsism. That's just my opinion.'' Yukito Karatani, ``Question I'', Kodansha Academic Library, p. 12).
Everywhere vernacular gender is being obliterated by financial connections, and vernacular speech is being obliterated by literacy, schooling, and television. (P.301-302)
As economic people born into an economic society, can we no longer regain our gender? As it happens, Ilyichi focuses on Japan.
But even today, in many parts of the world, men and women speak differently. Not only that, but the reason for the difference is that the language itself requires this. For example, Japanese women rarely discuss topics specific to men outside of offices, factories, and politics. fewer than European women. However, even if I were to talk about it, I would be talking about a different matter. The difference is so great that it is pointless to try to find equivalent words in the speech of men and women. Often, what is said is as different as the way in which it is expressed. If the women had to talk for five minutes about gardens or festivals, the men could talk about the same thing by saying a few words in an unspoken way. If you try to go beyond that, you'll lose face. (P.299)
What do you think? I think that kind of difference is gradually disappearing. Particularly in official situations (for example, debates), I think that partly due to the influence of English education, people are starting to refrain from expressing their differences in order to assert themselves.
Will the phrase "I don't like it, I don't like it, I like it" become a dead phrase?
I have heard stories about my grandmother from my mother several times. It seems like the way of thinking is quite different. And my wife's story is much different. Although half of what my mother said was ``meh'', I felt that there was some sort of respect for her.
As long as we can hear the words "gender equality, right?" and "because we're women" from the same person, I feel like it's still possible to restore gender (or create a new gender). Masu.
Therefore, the challenge of gender research is to find the remnants of gender in everyday life. It is not about romantically exaggerating the remnants of gender, nor is it about limiting it to the characteristics of sex, but it is about helping to make it socially recognized. (P.290)
I feel like gender will never disappear at all.
For me, about
HomoandSapiensas human phenomena. What is unique about it is that the symbolic humanity of gender is constantly manifesting itself inhuman form. (P.160)
I think Ilyichi had compassion for the weak and a love for humanity. This may have stemmed from his religious heart, and it may have also stemmed from his desire to love himself while loving others. It has gone beyond religion. And he may have been a lifelong Catholic priest.
What supported Ilyichi was probably the trust he had in that person, and even though I was in conflict with the people, I felt a desire to share it as a single-minded hope. there is.
History
Finally, a word about Ilyich's view of history.
Finally, as Bergsen also states, the main focus of Ilyich's historical theory is to clarify that the path that Western Europe took was a one-time one. I must once again emphasize one thing. This is another expression of his historical awareness of ``special historicity,'' and it also supports his confident words as follows. ``I especially want to show that it is still possible for two-thirds of humanity to avoid experiencing the modern industrial age'' (Tools for conviviality, 1973, p. ⅸ). P.428, translator's commentary)
The history I learned in school is paired with the theory of evolution, and is a unilinear, causal development (advanced) . In the case of living things, humans are at the top, and in the case of human history, we have developed from primitive (uncivilized) times, and Western culture (freedom, democracy, capitalism, socialism, science, etc.) is at the top. There is. Other cultures are considered "backward" or "inferior."
Powerful projects were attempted to make the past appear as the origin, or prototype, of the present. In other words, it was to make us believe that the languages, customs, and institutions of the past were nothing but the true ancestors and primitive forms of the modern languages, customs, and institutions that are familiar to us. (P.392)
Just when Russia invaded Ukraine, Israel began attacking the Gaza Strip. This is the state of Western European culture that is said to be at its "peak." I think it's about time we realize the strangeness of this historical perspective.
I have no intention of arguing with the observations made by recent animal behaviorists. However, the fact that modern humans without gender behave almost like monkeys confirms my thesis that the world of sex is inhuman. (P.160-161)
Aries' book mentioned in comment 121 says this:
(Life, death, sex, birth, etc.) These phenomena are considered to be biological, and therefore are not related to the nature of nature other than culture. Because it was seen as belonging and unchanging, it has not been taken up by historians until now. However, I learned that these phenomena also move and change! (Flip Aries, “[The Birth of a Child]” (https://www.amazon.co.jp/dp/4622018322/?tag=charmedias-22), Misuzu Shobo, P.1)
The unchanging nature of "biological things" and "natural properties" is the basis of modern (Western European) science. However, an evolutionary view of history cannot be born from this. In fact, both living things and nature (that is, the objective world) are changing. In Japan, there is the idea of ``reincarnation'' (reincarnation, reincarnation). Apparently it existed in ancient Greece as well. However, Christianity is eschatological. The world has a beginning (Genesis) and progresses in a straight line toward the end (the last days).
Society needs the past. In order to establish a sense of the present, living things require a past that suits them. Without a society having a creation myth, multiple first persons would not exist. In other words, there is no such thing as ``we''. The reason we have been able to survive as two genders at any time is because each society had its own rituals, festivals, and taboos. Industrial society also needs a creation myth; without it, industrial society would not exist. That is why industrial society has created a special system to deliver new information and the past, which has an unchanging meaning, to each household. The past became an industrial activity.
The attempt by industrial society to mass-produce its past has come to be called historiography. For about 100 years, historiography has created a continuity between a genderless present and a gendered past, justifying that sex is a continuation of gender. (P.391)
Every culture seems to have myths about the ``creation of the world'' and ``the structure of the world.'' Both Kojiki and Greek mythology have aspects that are ``illogical'' to our senses. The same goes for Genesis. Medieval theologians must have made extraordinary efforts to adapt Christianity (Judaism, Hebraism) to Greek philosophy (logic, Hellenism). Scholars must think and express their ideas logically.
What I have doubts about is the causal thinking in this book. It delineates and evaluates history from the thoroughly thought out and extremely formalized end goal of the civilizing process, places it in a linear chain of cause and effect, and identifies one cause: gender. This is an attempt to make inferences from extinction.
Is Ilyichi succumbing to the pressure of his own thinking here? (P.415, Bergsen)
I would rather agree with the translator Tamanoi City's opinion.
The Ilyich theory, as Bergsen says, is not so much a ``causal thinking'' that starts from ``a single cause,'' but rather a denial of historical continuity from gender to sex. The emphasis is on this. (P.421)
This does not mean "discontinuity in history." This is a denial of the very Western logic of cause and effect. It is based on the premise of continuity between the past and the future, and illuminates the future from the past.
He (Ilyichi...quoter) says nothing about the future. "I have no strategy to offer. I refuse to consider any possible prescriptions. For my part, I seek to grasp what exists and has existed. We want to avoid casting the shadow of the future on the concept.'' (P.416-417, Bergsen)
Bercksen himself quotes Ilyich's I think this is exactly what the words are referring to.

(P.2-3)__By "sex" I mean the result of a polarization in those common characteristics that, starting with late eighteenth century, are attributed to all human beings. Unlike vernacular gender, which always reflects an association between a dual, local, material culture and the men and women who live under its rule, social sex is "catholic"; it polarizes the human labor force, libido, character or intelligence, and is the result of a diagnosis (in Greek,"discrimination") of deviations from the abstract genderless norm of "the human." Sex can be discussed in the unambiguous language of science. Gender bespeaks a complementarity that is enigmatic and asymmetrical. Only metaphor can reach for it.(P.4)
(P.4)__N.B. To me, the pursuit of a non-sexist "economy" us as absurd as a sexist one is abhorrent. Here I shall expose the intrinsically sexist nature of economics as such and clarify the sexist nature of the most basic postulates on which economics, "the science of values under the assumption of scarcity," is built. (P.4)
(P.4-5)__I want to examine the economic apartheid and subordination of women and yet avoid the socio-biological and structuralist traps that explain this discrimination as "naturally" and "culturally" inevitable, respectively. (P.5)
(P.5)__More than I realized when I began, the ordinary speech of the industrial age revealed itself as both genderless and sexist. I knew that gender was dual, but my thinking was constantly distorted by the genderless perspective that industrialized language necessarily enforces. (P.5)

(P.7-8)__To explain the appearance of dominance of key words in a language, I learned to distinguish vernacular speech, into which we grow through daily intercourse with people who speak their own minds, from taught mother tongue, which we acquire through professionals employed to speak for and to us. Key words are a characteristic of taught mother tongue. They are even more effective than the mere standardization of the vocabulary and grammatical rules in their repression of the vernacular because, having the appearance of a common sense, they put a pseudo-vernacular gloss on engineered reality. Key words, then, are also more important for the formation of an industrialized language than creolization by technical terms because each one denotes a perspective common to the entire set. I have found that the paramount characteristic of key words in all languages is their exclusion of gender.
(P.9)__with the feminist dream of a genderless economy without compulsory sex roles; with the leftist dream of a political economy whose subjects would be equally human; with the futurist dream of a modern society where people are plastic, their choices of being a dentist, a male, a Protestant, or a gene-manipulator deserving the same respect. (P.9)
(P.9)__An industrial society cannot exist unless it imposes certain unisex assumptions: the assumptions that both sexes are made for the same work, perceive the same reality, and have, with some minor cosmetic variations, the same needs. And the assumption of scarcity, which is fundamental to economics, is itself logically based on this unisex postulate. (P.9-10)
(P.10)__For example, men and women have always grown up; now they need "education" to do so. In traditional societies, they matured without the conditions for growth being perceived as scarce. (P.11)

(P.11)__And if this is true - namely, that economic growth is intrinsically and irremediably gender-destructive, that is, sexist - the sexism can be reduced only at the "cost" of economic shrinkage. Further, the decline of sexism requires as a necessary, albeit insufficient, condition the contraction of the cash nexus and the expansion of non-market-related, non-economic forms of subsistence.(P.14-15)
(P.12)__I believe, however, that this is the time to turn social strategies topsy-turvy, to recognize that peace between men and women, whatever form it might take, depends on economic contraction and not on economic expansion. (P.16)
Upon reflection, I now see that an industrial economy without a sexist hierarchy is as farfetched as that of pre-industrial society without gender; that is, without a clear division between what men and what women do, say, and see. Both are pipe dreams, regardless of the sex of the dreamer. But the reduction of the cash nexus, that is, of both commodity production and commodity dependence, is not in the realm of fantasy. (P.17)
(P.15)__Whenever possible, however, I used old words in new ways to say precisely what both theory and the evidence demanded.(LF)(FF)My theory allows me to oppose two modes of existence, which I call the reign of vernacular gender and the regime of economic sex. The terms themselves indicate that both forms of being are dual and that the two dualities are very different in kind. By social gender I mean the eminently local and timebound duality that sets off men and women under circumstances and conditions that prevent them from saying, doing, desiring, ore perceiving "the same thing." By economic, or social sex I mean the duality that stretches toward the illusory goal of economic, political, legal, ore social equality between women and men. Under this second construction of reality, as I shall show, equality is mostly fanciful. (P.20)

GENDERLESS INDIVIDUALISM
(P.22)__ Marcel Mauss was the first to recognize that "only recently (FF)have our Western societies made man into an economic animal" (1090). Westernized man is Homo oeconomicus. (P.9-10)
(P.25)__ the possessive individual is genderless, anthropologically construed as a merely sexed neuter. Logically, as I shall argue, only the individual who is both possessive and genderless can fit the assumption of scarcity on which any political economy must rest. The institutional "identity" of Homo oeconomicus excludes gender. He is a neutrum oeconomicum. Therefore, the loss of social gender is an integral part of the history of scarcity and of the institutions that structure it. (P.11)
INVIDIOUS INDIVIDUALISM
(P.25-26)__ The contemporary, genderless, possessive individual, the subject of the economy, lives by decisions based on considerations of marginal utility. Every economic decision is embedded in a sense of scarcity. and thus tends toward a kind of envy unknown to the past. Modern productive institutions at the same time foster and mask invidious individualism, something the subsistence-oriented institutions of all past ages were designed to reduce and to expose. (P.12)
(P.26)__ In this essay, I discuss the appearance of new kind of envy, characteristic of the relations between the sexes, one that arises only as gender fades from a society. (P.12)
(P.28)__ Malevolent disparagement between men and women is not a new social phenomenon; the institutionalization of lifelong invidious comparison between genderless individuals is historically unprecedented. (P.13)
SEX AND SEXISM
The new, genderless meaning of the modern "sex" appears clearly in such terms as "sexuality". When functioning as a key word, sex is paradoxically genderless. And the formation of genderless sexuality is one of the necessary prerequisites for the appearance of Homo oeconomicus. For this reason I oppose economic sex to vernacular gender. By former, I designate a complementary duality; by the second, the polarization of a common characteristic. (P.14)
(P.30)__ An ideal type is a conceptual construct (ein Gedankenbild), which is neither historical reality nor even "true" reality. (P.14)
(P.30-31)__ For me, gender and sex are ideal, limiting concepts to designate a polarity: the industrial transformation of society from a "gendering" into a "sexing" system. For both, for gender and for sex, anatomy is but the raw material. Both gender and sex transform the genital organs into a social reality. Gender transforms the penis into innumerable types of phalluses; sex only produces the one, international, threatening, enviable "penis". (P.14)
ENVIRONMENTAL DEGRADATION
(P.32-33)__ In my opinion, political ecology cannot mature unless it incorporates two distinctions, now neglected: first, the juristic distinction between the commons and productive resources and, second, the distinction between complementary domains and genderless space. (P.15)
Counterproductivity is a social indicator that measures a group- or class- specific frustration resulting from the obligatory consumption of a good or service. Time loss through the acceleration of traffic patterns, medicine that makes one sick rather than well, stultification by(FF) educational curricula or news, dependence induced through political or social guidance - all are examples. The phenomenon can be viewed as measuring the intensity with which a modern institution, by technical necessary, denies a majority of its clients the purported benefit for which one of its characteristics - for example, speed in transportation - was originally engineered and publicly financed. Counterproductivity is not congestion, a frustration that results simply from the fact that commodities of the same kind get into each other's way, be these cars, curricula, or therapies. In my opinion, counterproductivity is the result of a radical monopoly of commodities over vernacular values, which I still called use values in Ivan Illich, Tools for Conviviality(....) . This radical monopoly stems ultimately from the transformation of the commons - for instance, those regulated by traditional lows on the right of way for pedestrians - into public utilities necessary for the production or circulation of commodities. (P.15-16)
THE RECOVERY OF COMMONS
(P.39)__ In this sense, scarcity defines the field in which the laws of economics relate (1) subjects (possessive, invidious, genderless individuals - personal or corporate), (2) institutions (which symbolically foster mimesis), and (3) commodities, within (4) an environment in which the commons have been transformed into resources, private or public. (P.18-19)
(P.41)__ In the duality I propose, the asymmetric complementarity of gender is opposed to the polarization of homogeneous characteristics that constitutes social sex. (P.20)
Economic Sex
(P.43-44)__ Proof of economic discrimination against woman does not have to be established here. The evidence is already overwhelming. Fifteen years of feminist research has removed all doubts. However, two major tasks remain. First, we must learn to distinguish three separate arenas in all modern economics. In each of these arenas women are economically discriminated against, albeit in different ways. The three forms of discrimination were theretofore confused. Second, we must grow to understand the difference between this threefold economic discrimination against women and the patriarchal subordination of women in societies not yet penetrated by the cash nexus. Thus, sexist discrimination will serve as a speculum that mirrors what is called "economy" in advanced industrial societies. Any economy based on formal exchanges between the producer and the consumer of goods and/or services is first divided into a statistically reported and an unreported sector - the arenas of reported and unreported discrimination against women on the job. And then there always exists another economy, the shadow of the former, which is the third arena of discrimination against women: that found in the nether sector of shadow work. (P.22)

(P.67)__ With the incorporation from a subsistence- to shadow-worker, the social reality of the prostitute has also radically changed. The(FF) prostitute belonged to the minority of women engaged in disembedded market activities - her services were economically distinct from those rendered by the mistress or maid embedded in the household's subsistence. As women during the nineteenth century entered the formal economy, mainly as shadow workers, the decent woman and the whore found themselves in unprecedented economic, and therefore violent, competition, which led to a new, brutal, institutional exclusion and management of prostitution.
(P.69-79)__ Patriarchy I take to mean a power imbalance under the assumption of gender (see FN 84). Sexism is clearly not the continuation of patriarchal power relations into modern societies. Rather, it is a hitherto unthinkable individual degradation of one half of humanity on socio-biological grounds (FNs 58 and 60). The lower prestige assigned by patriarchal societies (of the Mediterranean or of any other type) must therefore be carefully distinguished form the personal degradation of each individual woman who, under the regime of sex, is forced to compete with men. If the monetary (but statistically unreported) and the non-monetary markets of the U.S. are added together, their value certainly rivals the non-military economy on which economists base their overall indicators, predictions, and prescriptions. And, while in the formal, taxed, and statistically reported economy the labor force is to a large measure engaged in the artificial creation of pseudowork, producing useless articles, unwanted services, futile social controls, and costly economic intermediation, the real efficiency of the unreported economy is on the average much higher. The thriving black-market economy is the reason why countries like Italy have survived ten years during each of which economists confidently predicted impending bankruptcy, and why the people's democracies of Eastern Europe have survived theoretically impossible levels of mismanagement. What housework is now, women of old did not do. However, the modern woman finds it hard to believe that her ancestor did not have to work in a nether economy. (P.47)
(P.93)__ True to this metaphor, most of the toil that supports the visible tip is below the waterline, work done in the nether economy. As employment in the various kinds of wage labor increases, the submerged drudgery must expand even faster. (P.48)
(P.94)__ I call shadow work any labor by which the consumer transforms a purchased commodity into a usable good. I designate as shadow work the time, toil and effort that must be expended in order to add to any purchased commodity the value without which it is unfit for use. It becomes necessary because factories are located not where workers live, but where property is cheap, highways numerous, and sites for executive residential areas close. Commuting constitutes that shadow work by which the worker picks up his own labor force each morning, puts it into a car, and then, acting as the chauffeur of the commodity the employer has contracted to rent during the eight-hour workday, drives this commodity to the workplace. In addition, this shadow work requires a high level of capital investment. A significant for the percentage of each workday's wages must be spent by the worker for the purchase and maintenance of the var, and to pay the taxes that finance the construction of the highways on which the car runs. And commuting remains shadow work, whether the vehicle is a car, a bus, or a bicycle. Some small unions won their point. Their members then acted each morning as the chauffeurs employed by the factory to transport their own bodies to work. (FF) If, however, this kind of argument were generally accepted and workers were paid for the now unpaid toil expended on "capitalizing themselves" for the job and then transporting themselves to and from it, the industrial system would cease to function. As these men have done, women can also demand that their shadow work be transformed into paid labor. But as soon as the shadow price of shadow work and the cost of wage labor are compared, the paradoxical neture of the former becomes evident. At least in the non-militarized sector of ecery modern economy, the shadow work input required is arguably greater than that of wage labor. The industrial system is based on the assumption that most basic needs must be satisfied for an increasing majority of society's members by the consumption of a bill of goodes. Hence, the toil that is connected with the consumption of these commodities is anthropologically more fundamental than the toil connected with their production. This has been hidden,as long as technical imperfections made human hands or memories neccessary ingredients in the production proccess; Consistently productive labor was identified with legitimate work, and toil that was associated with consumption was passed over in silence or associated with satisfaction. Now, the time input in production decreases sharply, while the growing commodity intensity of society increases the time input necessary for consumption. At the sametaime, more different forms of consumption have become "musts" -- not satisfactory but instrumental form of time use: John drives, not because he likes driving, nor because he wants to drive like the Joneses, but because he cannot avoid it. (P.56)
(P.104)__Nota Bene !!。The gratis performance of shadow work is the single most fundamental condition for the family's dependence upon commodities. (P.57)

Not only are new products continually being designed for shadow work, for self-help, but microprocessors are increasingly taking over certain jobs, and those people no longer needed in wage labor are then pushed (FF) into shadow work. Thus, shadow work ceases to be pre-dominantly women's domain. Henceforth, "development" will mean the creation of a huge sector where people living economically marginal lives must, in order to survive, become adept at recycling the junk (that is, substandard or discarded commodities) that the industrialized sector has defined as trash. The majorities in underdeveloped nations increasingly assume a function that is analogous to the "housewife" of the "wage earner" (the industrialized world).
(P.140)__ Outside industrial societies, unisex work is the rare excption, if it exists at all. Few things can be done by women and also by men. The latter, as a rule, just cannot do women's work. (P.67)
(P.141)__ To belong means to know what befits our kind of woman, our kind of man. (P.68)
(P.142)__ Gender is something other and much more than sex.
Lux is light when it is subjectively perceived; lumen is a stream coming from the eye to light up the object. Vernacular reality can be thought of as a huge quilt, each patch having as its own, iridescent color, its lux. In the lumen of gender analysis, each culture appears as a metaphor, a metaphoric complementarity (FNs 55-57) relating two distinct sets of tools (FN 70), two types of space-time (FNs 78,79), two domains (FNs 86,87). These find expression in different but related styles in which the world is understood or grasped (FN 89) and spoken about (FNs94-101). Science, both mono- and stereoscopic (FN 46), is a filter that screens from the observer's eye the ambiguity of gendered light. But this same screen is permeable in both directions for the genderless lumen the observer projects on his object and in which he or she observes the object. The symbolic asymmetry that constitutes the social reality of each vernacular is effaced by the central perspective of cultural anthropology. The eigen-value of each and every vernacular reality cannot be seized in the monochromatic, genderless lumen of such concepts as role (FNs 61,62), exchange (FN 33), and structure (FNs 76,77). What the scientific observer the sees through his diagnostic spectacles are not men and women who rally act in a gendered subsistence society but sexual deviants from an abstract, genderless cultural norm who have to be operationalized, measured, ranked, and structured into hierarchies. Cultural anthropology that operates with genderless concepts is inevitably sexist (see my comment on Rubin, FN 7). This secism is much more blinding than old-style ethnocentric arrogance. (P.69)

(P.152)__ Science is doubly sexist: It is a male-dominated enterprise and it is a construct of genderless (objective) categories and procedures (see FN 52).
(P.152)__ The first kind of sexism, I would call moral and impute it to the character of the practitioners, individually or collectively.
(P.152)__ The second kind of sexism is more fundamental. I call it epistemological sexism. It filters gender - both male and female - outo of the concepts and methods of legitimate science (see FNs 46,52).
(P.153)__ This tendency has become so dominant that it threatened in the late seventies to become trivial, and scientific language came to express the male scientists' wish fulfilment about right / male dominance and left / female adaptation. This interpretation was challenged. For the literature, see FN 58. However, the challenge usually took either of two forms, both epistemologically sexist: (1) Typically, the criticism was explicitly fem-sexist on a moral level (the critic points out that the title of FN53 should have read "Left/Right"); (2) more seriously, the critic points out that Right/Left does indeed stand for duality, but duality in the abstract, and then ranges male/female as just one more among many dualities, confirming via strucualism the non-existence of gender as a duality sui generis (see more on structuralism, FN 76). My thinking on this point is nourished by the scholastic concept of relatio subsistens. (P.74)
(P.157-158)__ The comlementarity between genders is both asymmetric and ambiguous. Asymmetry implies a disproortion of size or value or power or weight; ambiguity does not. Asymmetry indicates a relative position; ambiguity, the fact that the two do not congrruously fit. (P.75)
(P.158)__ The ambiguity that characterizes gender is unique. It is two-sided: Men symbolize the mutual relationship differently than do women (see FN 53).
Hertz had begun to recognize as the root of culture, was repressed in the social sciences in favor of operational concepts such as role, class, exchange, and ultimately, "system" (see FN 76). Here I want to compare the complementarity that constitutes the relationship between the genders to the process of exchange between constituted partners. The former tends, ideally, toward "subsistent relations"; meanings (FF) metaphorically and not antithetically related. Exchange, in contrast, implies a relationship between social actors, and a common bond that is toward an ever clearer fit (homogeneity and not ambiguity) whose asymmetry therefore tends toward hierarchy and dependence. Where exchange structures relationships, a common denominator defines the fit. Where ambiguity constitutes the two entities that it also relates, ambiguity engenders new partial incongruities between men and women, constantly upsetting any tendency toward hierarchy and dependence. I do not quarrel with the observations made by the new ethologists; however, the fact that genderless modern humans behave almost as apes confirms my thesis that the regime of sex is inhumane. (P.76)
As nineteenth-century racist theories served to buttress European colonial pretensions, so contemporary sexist thought ministers to a worldwide regime of latter-day unisex humbug. (P.162-163)__ Both the racist and the service professional presume the existence of an objective perspective by which they can operationally rank people's claims to scarce privileges. Both rankings are based on the assumption of genderless individuals acting under conditions of growing scarcity. Therefore, the perspective of the racist or that of the modern educator fits only into modern Western culture. (P.78)

(P.166)__SFは科学の嫡出子である。 Animal sociology is a kind of science fiction in reverse. While SF attributes meaningful and purposeful behavior to constructs of the fantasy, AS, anmal sociology, attributes society to sub-humans. Both have in common with SS, social science, the fact that they operate with genderless terms. The occasional predictive value of SF scenarios or the confirmation of behaviorist theories by animal experiment simply demonstrate that SS categories are blind to what is characteristically and exclusively human; gendered coulture. (P.78)
Christopher Lasch, The New York Review of Books (November 24, 1977):15-18を参照。 (P.167-168)__ Within the framework of the nation state, which tended to monopolize service production even where the production and commerce of goods was left in private hands, the professionals "played on public fears of disorder and disease, adopted deliberately mystifying jargon, ridiculed popular traditions of self-help as backward and unscientific, and in this way created or intensified ... a demand for their services," Christopher Lasch, The New York Review of Books (November 24, 1977): 15-18. In this context, the professional establishments acquired the ability to define "deficiencies" by scientific opinion; to conduct research that would confirm this opinion: to subject entire population groups to compulsory testing; to impose therapy on those found to be in need of correction, cure, ore upgrading. (P.79)
(P.170)__ Gender is substantive. This is not true with sex in the economic neuter. In the perspective of the neuter, sex is a secondary attribute, a property of an individual, an adjective characteristic of a human being. The concept of sex role could not come into being until society's institutions were structured to meet the genderless needs of genderless clients with genderless commodities produced in a genderless world. The sex role builds on the existence of genderless man.
(P.170-171)__ Most people consider the sex role less changeable; women know that they are stuck with it in an oppressive way. But, like it or not, to have a sex role - be it assumed, imposed, or resented - is something other than belonging to a gender. (P.81)
__ As with the vernacular, one is born and bred into gender; the sex role is something acquired. One can blame parents or society for an "assigned" sex role or taught mother tongue; there is no way to complain about vernacular speech or gender. (LF) The distinction between vernacular gender and sex role is comparable to that between vernacular speech and taught mother tongue, between subsistence ande economic existence. Therefore, the fundamental assumptions about the one and the other are distinct. Vernacular speech, gender, and subsistence are characteristics of a morphological closure of community life on the assumption, implicit and often ritually expressed and mythologically represented, that a community like a body cannot outgrow its size. Taught mother tongue, sex, and a life-style based on the consumption of commodities all rest on the assumption of an open universe in which scarcity underlies all correlations between needs and means. (P.205)__ When inspecting the way in which the term is explained in dictionary and handbook, however, it becomes immediately obvious that three unrelated taxonimies of human activities are confused and consolidated by this "division": (1) the functional division of productive tasks (urban / rural, shoemaker / carpenter, the seventeen steps needed to make a needle); (2) the gender-specific assignment of tasks in traditional societies; and (3) the distinct and opposite roles assigned to the wage earner and to his or her dependents. The term cannot be used for historical or anthropological description without inducing confusion amang these three meanings. (P.94)

(P.210)__ Kin are those who in precisely defined terms can reach one another across the gender dividde. (P.99)

(P.211)__ Gender can neither be elicited from kinship nor, in a structuralist fashion, reduced to one aspect of a cosmic duality. (P.99)

(Gender and Wedlock)
(P.215)__ Westernization can be understood as the convergence of many different kinship patterns toward the model of the conjugal household. (P.101)
(P.217-218)__ For half a millennium the economy rested on the household of broken gender. The emergence of conjugal household production was the anthropological condition for the formation of early European peasantry and urban life - which distinguishes the European from farmers, merchants, and craftsmen elsewhere in the world. (LF) The spread of gendered but conjugal production was only the first stage in the process that set Europe apart from all other cultures. The couple provided a fundamental homogeneity for Christian Europe, although the social step into this state was not taken without hesitation. There were variations in time and place, and many communities remained out of step until after World War II. This economically productive wedlock was a first stage in the evolution of the couple; it did not immediately imply any loss of gender. Thus, for five hundred years, from the thirteenth to the early nineteenth centuries, a kind of wedlock spread in which men and women yoked in matrimonial production were kept to their respective gendered tasks. Both feudal and mercantilist organization of state power is predicted on the gendered couple. (LF)(FF) Then, quite abruptly during the nineteenth century, the gendered assignment of household tasks was replaced by the economic division of wage and shadow work, discriminatingly assigned according to the newly discovered sexual characteristics of the consorts. The age of broken gender had served in Europe (FF) as a transition from vernacular subsistence to economic sex. Only this curios second stage did economically distinct and genderless sex partners become the foundation of industrial production. And such couples provided the norm for the "libidinal structure and perception" of anthropologists born to them. (P.102-104)

(P.232)__ What one feels when going against the gender divide is a sentiment that is difficult for people today to reconstruct, partly because it seems to be as vernacular and, therefore, as "ungrammatical" as that divide itself, and partly because it is an experience that faded with gender. Neither "shame" nor "guilt" is quite the word, at least in their present-day meaning. (P.112)

(P.262)__ In feudal times it was the domus that was ennobled. The heir bore the title of the house, whether the heir was male or female was rather secondary. The main task of the her was to produce a new heir for the house. (P.117)
(Gender and the Home)
(P.265)__ Gender shapes bodies as they shape space and are in turn shaped by its arrangements. And the body in action, with its movements and rhythms, its gestures and cadences, shapes the home, the home as something more than a shelter, a tent, or a house. (P.118-119)
(P.265-266)__ In vernacular culture, dwelling and living coincide. With gender-bound tools, oriented by a gender-specific meaning, vernacular life weaves a gendered cocoon set in a biological niche. All living is dwelling, the shaping of a dwelling. To dwell means to live in the traces that past living has left. The traces of dwellings survive, as do the bones of people. Uninhabited space quickly becomes a desert. (LF) To build a home means to encroach on the territories of other life, wildlife, - for grains, donkeys, and the bacteria that coagulates the butter. Among possible ecological niches, the home forms a distinct class, but its special character has been more obscured than illuminated by recent ecological talk. (P.119)
(P.266-267)__ The ecologist may call all three of these locations niches. For the philosopher, they are places in three kinds of space, each brought into existence by a distinct kind of action. Biological nesting, technical parking, and historical dwelling generate heterogeneous spaces. By instinct, the animal stakes out its territory. The nest is the spatial mode for the instinctive reproduction of its kind. A garage is the very opposite, designed for parking under the assumption of scarce space. (P.119)
(P.267)__ The apartment is a repository that serves for the confinement of people, who are considered fragile and dangerous. It is impossible for the tenants to "make a home"; the place is structured and equipped for shadow work only. It is the address at which wires and traffic lanes, postmen and police can reach and service outside institutions on Valium, TV, and supermarket deliveries. It is the specialized place for the practice of intimacy between genderless humans, the only place left where the two sexes can pee into the same pot. (P.119-120)
(P.268)__ A home made by people, not for them, is a space engendered by the bodies of its inhabitants, the environmental trace of vernacular living. (P.121)
(P.268-269)__ The culture may be matriarchal or patriarchal, the greater share of power in the hands of women or men, but only for women does to live and to dwell mean to engender bodies, to leave behind a trail of new life. In one culture men jay build shelters, make fences, or terrace a hill; in another, these tasks are assigned to women. But only from women does bodily life come into the world. No matter how the local mythology depicts the creator of the world - as mother, father, or androgyne; no matter whose name the children carry - mother's, father's or uncle's; the special space (and the time that corresponds to it) that sets the home apart from nest and garage is engendered only by women, because it it they who bear living bodies. (P.122)
(P.269-270)__ Unisex architecture is necessarily male-sexist, as is the unisex ticking of the watches. Such designs place women, in their flesh and rhythms, in double jeopardy: Their potential contribution to homemaking is frustrated, and they are yanked out of their proper gender context; in both respects, they suffer more than men. (LF) By being turned into economic producers - paid or unpaid, on the job or at home - women, like men, are deprived of the environmental conditions that allow them to live by dwelling in a place and, by dwelling, to make a home. To the degree that they become more productive economically, both men and women became homeless. (P.122)
(P.271-272)__ The cessation of the menses, the suspicion of pregnancy, the swelling of the body, miscarriage, abortion, birth, lactation were no less women's affair the infanticide or rearing of the in-fant (in Latin, literally, the non-speaker). These matters were neither private nor secret, but gendered. Generally, snuffing out its life by sleeping on it, by putting it on the window ledge in winter, or by withholding her breast from the monster would not be a concern of the authorities. In public language and discourse, both medical and legal, it is clearly women who bring children into the world. (P.123)

<メモ>
Ivan Illich, Gender (1983, Marion Boyars)
